I have written lots of pieces over the years. I had a column in The Western Mail - (a national daily in Wales) under the pseudonym “Joanna Major“ - (almost anagram of Johnny Jarman) and was written from the point of view of a middle class English housewife which was a doddle seeing as I was nowt but a working class painter and decorator as I was at the time. I had to dig REALLY deep to find my feminine side... So deep in fact, I had to shore up the excavation in case my innards caved in...Still, it earned me some pennies.
My first earnings was for a quickie sketch lasting ten seconds for a show called Gwyll Gari in Wales- I got paid £10.00 for it. Money for old rope I thought! 3 months without a sale later I began to hit the mark with sketches for the Grumbleweeds, Russ Abbott, Little & Large, Llwyth O Docs, Y Jocars , Corrigan & Womack ( who? ) Cannon & Ball as well as Rudi Carell and Harald und Eddi Show, Samstag Nacht and Happyness in Germany. - A silent film comedy called Sprint, The Diether and Carry Show and Jacques Vermiere shows for Belgian TV No, you don’t need to know the language.. As long as the idea is funny, the sketch will work - Just make sure the gags are not word based...HERE are some example QUICKIE SKETCHES. There are some full 3 minute SKETCHES HERE Kids shows for BBC like Fast Forward and Giggly Bitz also bought pieces from me. ( Have a look at THIS to see what gives you the most fantastic buzz of writing)
I have done a few stand up sessions too in my time... ( Finest laxative known to man ) HERE I am doing a stint one night in Coventry.
In 2005 I was commissioned to write a play detailing the life of St Wilfrid by a school in Yorkshire bearing the sainted gentleman’s name . Quite a challenge and a lot of research. It was to be performed annually as a mystery street theatre piece on the anniversary of the schools founding. Read it HERE if you fancy it. It is all in rhyming couplets, limerick and other verse forms...
Since then I have been working on a film screenplay - not comedy - writing some Radio sketches for an up and coming show on Radio 4. Also writing a stage farce with fellow writer Trevor Barrett. ( He is a HOOT!)
I also do after dinner speaking assignments on Comedy Subjects. Nothing blue or indelicate, just pure fun and laughter . Contact me for details
I have also written lots of comic song lyrics - to be sung only when the audience are slightly inebriated... They will clap anything in that condition. HERE are one or two... A ballad or two... HERE . Got some comic verse as
